Wednesday Lincoln Park TURF Coed REC 8v8 Soccer – Playoffs Week 2 Recap

Shenanigans (5-1-3) vs. Team Boohoo (3-2-2) – Wednesday, September 2, 2020

Spencer N scored two goals to give #5 seed Shenanigans a 3-1 upset win over #5 seed Team Boohoo in the quarterfinals of the Wednesday Lincoln Park TURF Coed REC 8v8 Soccer Playoffs. The win was Shenanigans fourth win in a row dating back to Week 5 of the regular season, and they would try to carry this winning momentum with them into the semifinals of the Playoffs. They would immediately take the field to take on #9 seed Tenderloins with an opportunity to advance into the Finals. More on this game below. Team Boohoo recorded three solid victories during the regular season but were not able to bring that winning formula with them into the postseason. Unfortunately for Team Boohoo, they just could not keep up with a very determined Shenanigans crew. The leagues overall leading goal scorer, Michael Garai, knocked in his 10th goal of the season to help his squad avoid the shutout. The loss ends the season for Team Boohoo, but we hope they’ll be back on the pitch in the upcoming Fall season!

 

Shenanigans (5-1-3) vs. Tenderloins (3-4-2) – Wednesday, September 2, 2020

#9 seed Tenderloins came up just short in a 2-1 thriller that ended in a shootout on Wednesday night, ending its season in the semifinals of the Wednesday Lincoln Park TURF Coed REC 8v8 Soccer Playoffs. Elliott Renft provided the offensive fire power for Tenderloins during regulation time. Unfortunately for Tenderloins, they came up just short in the penalty shootout and saw their season come to an end. It was a great run for this crew, and we hope to see them make another run at the title on the TURF in the upcoming Fall season! #5 seed Shenanigans, had to fight, wait, and watch as goalkeeper F. Lopez willed their side to a victory on Wednesday night. In the end, however, it was Tenderloins misfortune that decided it. Tenderloins fourth and deciding attempt in PKs missed, sending #5 Shenanigans into the Finals against #3 seed Let’s Get Messi (6-2-0) coming up on Wednesday night.

 

Let’s Get Messi (6-2-0) vs. Shooting for Shotz (4-3-1) – Wednesday, September 2, 2020

Six goals were scored over the span of 40 minutes on Wednesday evening at the Lincoln Park TURF Field as #3 seed Let’s Get Messi topped #2 seed Shooting for Shotz in an entertaining 4-2 final in quarterfinals action. Three different players knocked in a goal for Let’s Get Messi, including Willie Thompson who notched his third and fourth goals of the season. Steven Tsonis and Elizabeth Moy supplied the others as #3 seed Let’s Get Messi would need to step back onto the field and take on #2 seed Grass Kickers (5-2-1) in the semifinals. Sarah Mills and Edward Maynard each knocked in a goal in this match for #6 seed Shooting for Shotz, unfortunately for them and the rest of the Shooting for Shotz crew, it just was not enough to get past a determined Let’s Get Messi squad. Shooting for Shotz battled in every game this season; they just ran out of gas in this quarterfinal’s matchup. We look forward to seeing them on the field during the Fall season!

 

Let’s Get Messi (6-2-0) vs. Grass Kickers (5-2-1) – Wednesday, September 2, 2020

#3 seed Let’s Get Messi shocked the league on Wednesday night as they claimed their second victory of the evening with a penalty-kick shootout (5-4) result over #2 seed Grass Kickers on a beautiful evening at the Lincoln Park TURF field. #3 seed Let’s Get Messi will now advance to face #5 seed Shenanigans (5-1-3) in the Championship game coming up on Wednesday night. The two sides battled to a 1-1 draw through 50 minutes of play, as both teams tallied a goal in regulation time. Let’s Get Messi got on the board with a beautiful goal from Willie Thompson, his fifth overall on the season. Robert Thomashow provided the scoring for Grass Kickers in this contest during regulation time. After closing the remainder of regulation and both OT periods deadlocked, the match moved on to penalty kicks. In the end, however, it was Grass Kickers misfortune that decided it. Grass Kickers fifth and deciding attempt in PKs missed, sending #3 Let’s Get Messi into the Finals. It was a heartbreaking end to a fantastic season for Grass Kickers, and we hope to see them make another run at the title in the upcoming Fall session!
